How to help me understand the concept of the tithe and Biblical giving as a new Christian
Why Should I Tithe?
by Jason Espalin
To many, the concept of tithing or giving may be new
and difficult to understand, especially for the new
believer. The thought of giving a minimum of 10% of
our increase may at first seem excessive or even impossible.
To come to terms with this new concept, there may be
a few questions that need to be answered for the non-tither.
The first being “Why should I tithe?” In
Malachi 3:8-12 (KJ) we see that if we do not tithe we
are robbing God and are cursed. God commands, “Bring
the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may
be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the
Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open
the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing
that you will not have room enough for it.” These
verses demonstrate that there are consequences for not
tithing (being cursed) and rewards for tithing and giving
(abundant blessing).
With a good understanding of why we should give and
tithe, the next question that may be asked is “How
can I afford to give?” For the average person,
just paying the bills and putting food on the table
may be a challenge. The answer to this question may
differ for each person but there are some simple keys
to help. First, make it the #1 priority when you get
paid. Before paying any other bills, set the 10% tithe
and other giving immediately aside. Remember, this is
the Lord’s money and you have committed to honoring
Him with it. Second, take assurance from Philippians
4:19 (KJ), “And my God will meet all your needs
according to His glorious riches in Christ Jesus.”
Trust in the Lord that he will keep his promises and
you will soon see abundance and blessing in your life.
Finally, examine your spending habits. When making buying
decisions, ask yourself if this is the best use of the
resources God has given you. Pray and ask for wisdom
before making major purchases.
By following the keys to tithing given in this article,
you will find it easier and more natural to pay the
tithe. The other 90% will go a long way and you may
soon see many types of breakthroughs. Breakthroughs,
both spiritually and financially, that are a result
of the Lord’s blessing. Remember, the decision
to tithe and give is a heart issue. By trusting the
Lord with your finances, you will enjoy a better relationship
with Him and sow into the Kingdom at the same time.
